“The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being
can alter his life by altering his attitudes.” --William James
It is becoming increasingly accepted that emotional intelligence (EI) has a great impact in our lives, from our success in the workplace to our relationships with others in all aspects of our lives. The wonderful thing about EI is that unlike IQ, we can increase it regardless of the level that we are at by adopting and practicing new habits of thought and behavior.
Here are 5 Habits of Highly Emotionally Intelligent People.
1. Choose to focus on the positive
While they don’t deny, or ignore the negative around them, highly emotionally intelligent people consciously spend their time and energy on the positive. They believe that by doing so they will attract more positive people and events to them. When looking at all situations they look for what went right instead of what went wrong. They chose to spend their time with other positive people and are optimistic about their future.
2. Think ahead and let go of the past
Highly emotionally intelligent people learn from their failures and mistakes and move on. Their natural tendency is to look for the lesson that they can use to their advantage in the future. They don’t dwell on the past, choosing to think of the possibilities that are ahead of them. Being positive thinkers they look for and see opportunities where others may only see difficulties.
3. Are able to set and maintain their boundaries
Although they are friendly and open, people high in EI are not pushovers. They are able and willing to set boundaries that keep others from taking advantage of them, their time and energy. Self-confident, they rely upon their intuition to guide them when they sense that someone wants to take advantage of them. Politely, but firmly, they are able to say no to situations and requests that do not serve their best interests or values.
4. Continue to learn and grow throughout their lives
Highly emotionally intelligent people see life as an ongoing opportunity for growth and learning. They continue to develop their knowledge of the world around them and invest time and energy into their own personal development. They are curious about other people and see every interaction as an opportunity to learn something new or gain insight that they never had before. While confident in their abilities, they are humble, recognizing that there is something that they can learn from virtually every person they come into contact with.
5. Have fun and enjoy the journey
While they are goal oriented and continuously striving to increase their knowledge base, people high in EI recognize the value of enjoying life. They are open and eager to explore and try new hobbies and interests that will allow them to experience life to the fullest. Their emotional self-awareness allows them to recognize that they need down time to rest, relax, rejuvenate and play. They are the people that sign up for courses, taking up new interests and hobbies throughout their lives, continuously expanding their experiences and enjoyment of life. They have an adventurous spirit and warm inviting disposition that attracts other life minded people to them. This gives them a strong support network that they can rely upon that will nurture and support them throughout their lives.
