You set a goal, and it’s a big one. No one ever tells you that the work in the middle – that whole ‘valley’ part of it can get a little rough, can feel a little discouraging at times, or can out and out make you want to throw in the towel. But, what if we approached our goals differently? What if we put in ways to not only support ourselves but welcome the support from others on our journey? Because I’m sure you’ll agree, moving toward a big goal and making big changes in your life doesn’t exactly feel easy
The path to reaching your big goal often looks like a squiggly line rather than a sleek direct vector from point A to point B. It’s more often like turn left here, turn right here, go back two steps, leap over that puddle, put your scuba gear on because you’re going for a deep dive, grab your boots so you don’t get mud all over you and on and on. This inevitably leads to stress, anxiety, highs and lows, and sometimes even exhaustion especially if we’re pushing too hard.
Goals are important, though. They’re part of human nature, especially if we want to continue to grow and create a life that really fills us with passion and lights up our heart every day. When goals are really big, they require us to stretch, but if we keep pushing without taking time to back off a little, we’ll burn out before we ever reach that finish line.
So what’s the solution? We don’t want to lose momentum, so how do we support ourselves organically without thwarting our efforts? While just about everyone would love to jet off to an exotic island getaway for a week, it’s not always feasible nor realistic. However, there are a few easy ways to rewire your mind, body, and spirit to support your new journey of growth and forward movement toward your goal.
Here are 5 ways to support you and invite others to support you as well:
Exercise has a plethora of benefits for your mind, body, and spirit! It can actually boost your focus, your energy, and your mood. And it doesn’t have to be a long workout! As little as 7 minutes of mild to moderate exercise every day is enough to get the benefits I mentioned above and tone your body. There are plenty of workouts on YouTube that you can find to guide you through. Now, if your goal is related directly to exercise, you may want to consider an alternate form of exercise other than what you’re doing to switch up your training as this will open up the neural pathways in your brain and boost your mind activity in a great way.
2. Eating Healthy.
You cannot have a junk food diet and expect to achieve a big, glamourous goal. This comes down, once again, to brain function. When we are feeding our minds and bodies with healthy, whole foods, we nourish and support our journey more effectively and we’re able to make smarter decisions in all ways. We may even encounter increased energy. As with exercise, eating healthy is one of those ways that may seem like a chore, but in essence, your mind and your body thrive more when you do it. And when your mind and body are thriving, you open the door to connection to your spirit even more profoundly.
Oh. Busted on this one. I must admit, this is the one that’s always been my biggest challenge. I love what I do and when I’m moving toward a big goal, I’m feeling that momentum and get a little too caught up in the excitement of it all. The problem with that is we are indeed, human, and our minds, bodies and yes, spirits, need downtime (and I’m not just talking about sleeping). We need time to let our minds chill out, our bodies to sit back, and enjoy the moment. To take some long, luxurious breaths and just simply BE in the moment. Take it all in. Take some time to journal or to evaluate what we’re grateful for. It can’t be all work and it can’t be all play. We need to figure in downtime. When we are restored and rejuvenated during this time, we serve our goals and others better because we are giving from an overflowing fountain rather than an empty cup.
This is one of my favorites. “A day without laughter, is a day wasted,” one of my favorite quotes from Charlie Chaplin. This doesn’t have to be barrels of laughter, this can be playfulness and a sense of lightness, much like children experience. Children are easy to laugh and they love to play, yet as we get older and reach adulthood, we find ways to dismiss the whimsy and focus on being more serious to get to those goals. But if we do that too much, moving toward the goal can seem more like drudgery than an experience that we’re enjoying. Keep it light, infuse some fun, and welcome the giggles.
This is the ultimate way to enroll others into supporting our journey toward the big goal. Humans are made for connection. Whether it’s connection with nature, with the Universe, with animal companions or our friends and families, we start to wither on the vine without it, that’s why communities like One Wise Life are so important (if you haven’t checked out our Facebook Page yet, join us!). We need that connection to keep us feeling alive, engaged, sharing, and experiencing the richness and depth of life with each other. That’s how memories are made and that’s how we cross our finish lines quicker with our raving fans wildly supporting us.
Life isn’t just moving toward big goals, that’s only a small portion of it. Life is about experiencing the richness of what unfolds as we move toward our uplevel. As we move toward what we want to become or who we want to be today, tomorrow or next year. And in order to do that in a more sustainable way, in a loving way for ourselves and others, we must figure in a support system that works well for us, that keeps us fueled, fired up, and motivated as we move forward toward that epic goal. So, today, how will you support yourself so you can go bigger?
