As Forest Gump said, life may be like a box of chocolates, but it’s certainly NOT a restaurant. In fact, if your life were a storefront, there would be a sign hanging over the front door entrance that would read “This Isn’t a Restaurant. There’ll Be No Receiving Without Giving First.” Many people approach their lives with a "restaurant style" mentality. They actually expect to be able to sit down, have Life serve them up a great meal, and the decide whether they're going to "pay", let alone "tip" based on how good the "life meal" was. Life, let alone anything else of value in our journey, just doesn't work this way.
This is a basic Law of the Universe and yet we are constantly being bombarded by messages from marketing and society around us that there is an easier way, that it is possible to get “something for nothing”. I assure you. It isn’t.
From the beginning of time, farmers have known that they must invest themselves and their efforts and resources fully if they are to expect to receive a bountiful harvest. They know that absolutely no amount of time spent sitting and looking at the fields with hope and wishful thinking, without putting in the physical work, will yield what they want.
The hunter realizes that no animal is going to simply walk up, hand the hunter a cloth napkin and eating utensils, and then lay down and commit suicide.
We know these facts to be true, and yet how many of us are approaching our own lives, and the results we want to achieve, in just this way? As the master Jim Rohn described this way: “Most sit down in front of the wood furnace and say, give me some heat and I’ll give you some wood.”
You know this isn’t the way life works. That being the case, take a moment and examine your own life. Now ask yourself if there's an area where you're asking for particular results and yet haven’t invested or given of yourself there?
- Are you wanting to improve your health and fitness levels, yet are spending the majority of your day in a seated or reclined position while finding yourself in a buffet line several days per week?
- Do you want to make strides in and improve your relationship with your spouse or significant other, yet you’re leaving it up to them to make things better?
- Do you want to raise great kids who’ll become pillars and excel in our society, yet never can manage to find “quality time” to spend with them?
- Are you looking for a raise or to move up the corporate or career ladder and yet you apply or invest yourself no more than those who are employed alongside of you?
As your life cannot and will not change from what it is today unless you change. You cannot and will not receive the results in your life that you desire unless you give what it takes to create those results. That means giving of “You”; your time, your dedication, your loyalty, your effort and your resources.
Please realize that you’re already giving of “You” to something. Every day you trade the moments and hours of your life for something. If you don’t like your results, change what you’re doing! All I’m saying is, if you’re going to trade the moments and hours of your life for something, make sure you’re trading for what you want. Make sure it’s a “good trade”. The way to do that is to “give”.
My favorite book is filled with lessons that tell us that the only way for us to receive what we want is to take the first action, to “give first”. Those lessons that most of us have heard referred to since our childhood are: “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door shall be opened to you, and as you sow, so shall you reap”, among others.
These lessons and directions for how to live our best life are found in many ancient texts and have been taught for thousands of years and they still hold true for us today.
So what of those who “win” the lottery? Honestly, I can think of no better example for us than this to show us that the above Universal Laws are absolute. When you examine the documentation showing us that the vast majority of lottery winners not only find themselves back in the financial shape they were in before winning within 5 to 7 years, many are even worse off financially. You simply cannot “receive and hang onto”, without “giving first”.
So what is my advice to you if you want to begin to truly experience the results you’re looking for in the key areas of your life?
My Action Strategy for you today is simply this:
- Look at the areas of your life where you absolutely MUST experience new results, really true transformation.
- Decide what you’re willing to give of yourself in order to make those results reality.
- Then, resolve to begin giving that TODAY!
