All of life is choices, decisions. You are where you are right now in your life today due to the decisions and choices of your yesterday. This is true for each one of us. The great news is that with every day we are alive, we have a new opportunity to change our circumstances going forward. If we don’t like the results we are experiencing, we have been blessed with the power to make a new choice.
To alter our current results, our current circumstances, we must first realize exactly how choices are made.
Our choices are based on a culmination of our thoughts, feelings and actions.
When we think about anything, we decide on the meaning of that thing for us. Then, we begin to feel a certain way about that meaning and our actions are then based on our thoughts and feelings. How does this impact our decision?
When we are thinking about doing something, we make our decision about whether or not we’ll do it based on the meaning we’ve assigned to the thing and our feelings concerning it. If we're trying to decide to step out and do something we’ve never attempted before, we'll make our decision based on what attempting it means to us, and our feelings we associate with that attempt. If we believe it to be something that we cannot do, and we feel strongly about it being impossible or at least very difficult for us, then most of the time we won’t even try.
Where this becomes a real challenge is when we discover that for most of us, the majority of what we feel about things like our own potential, our health and fitness, our financial earning potential, relationships, and virtually every area of our life is based on input from others as we were raised and schooled, mostly before our thirteenth birthday. For most of us, whether we believe we can or can’t do something has been part of a belief system belonging to someone else. Each of us was raised to believe a certain way about certain things, and many of those beliefs concern our own power and potential to alter our own life and the results we can achieve or experience.
There are those who were fortunate enough to have been raised in homes and situations where they were constantly told that they could accomplish anything they wanted, and that anything was possible. Many of those have gone on to become some of the most successful people in our society, largely due to their optimistic view of the world and their own opportunities as well as the way they approached those opportunities. There are also those who were raised in surroundings where they were constantly told that nothing outside of what they were experiencing currently in their life was possible for them. That they would simply have to play “the hand of cards they were dealt.” The above is a bit of a simplified generalization, but I assure you that there are many in this world who could “take the hand you were dealt in life” and WIN with it!
So, how do you know if your results and even your potential to experience an extraordinary life have been limited by the beliefs of others? And, if so, how do you change your thought process and begin to make your own choices that EMPOWER you, rather than LIMIT you?
Pay close attention to the next few points and you’ll be on the road to creating your own empowering choices and results, and breaking through to new levels of performance, in no time.
We ALL talk to ourselves more than we communicate with anyone else. The chances are that if any of the following statements represent your inner dialogue that you regularly have with yourself, they came from someone else.
If you’ve ever felt:
“I’m not good enough.”
“I don’t deserve to be happy. (Or successful, financially secure, fit and trim, in a great relationship, etc. You fill in the blank.)
“This is all I deserve and it’s not meant for me to have anything more.”
The fact is that the ONLY way that any of those or other limiting beliefs ARE true for us is if we believe that they are. Because once we buy into the belief, we then assign a certain feeling to the belief. You can call it learned helplessness.
When you get right down to it, the likelihood of anyone’s determination of what we are capable of being “spot on” is remote at best. You are a completely unique individual, with knowledge and experiences unlike ANYONE who’s come before you. Scientists tell us that the likelihood of there being another exactly like you are 50 Billion to 1, completely impossible. So, you and you alone are the only one who can determine what you can accomplish. You create your own results and reality concerning your capabilities.
We all have desires that speak to us to give us glimpses of what is possible for us. I’m not referring to simple hopes and wishful thinking. A true desire that speaks to us concerning something that we should step out and do with our life comes from our higher self who is telling us what we are truly capable of achieving IF we step out. The word “desire” in the root form means “from the father” and, when that desire “speaks” to us, is our higher purpose asking us to trust and to strive to become more. A true desire for our life is not one that comes and goes, like wishful thinking. Instead, it is a message that will literally not leave us alone. It keeps us up at night. The challenge presents itself when this desire is at odds with the limiting beliefs impressed upon our thinking by others.
You see, we give up all power to control and affect our own destiny the moment we accept someone else’s belief about out potential, and what we’re capable of, as “fact”.
So, what is the solution? How do you take back the power to think and believe for yourself rather than fall victim to the limiting beliefs of others?
You begin to take back your power and to create new results for your life the instant you begin to question what you’ve never questioned before.
We will examine practical and effective ways and strategies for you to replace limiting beliefs with empowering ones in future posts and articles, but for today I am asking you to take the very first step in your empowerment. That step? Become a Skeptic.
In order to break through to a new level of performance, to a new result, you absolutely MUST step outside of, and move beyond, the confines of someone else’s beliefs about what you are capable of. Only you, and you alone, can determine that. You must take back your power to make the decisions which are going to affect your destiny.
Begin this process TODAY by approaching every limiting thought you have by asking yourself the following questions:
“Why do I believe this?”
“Do I really think this way or did this come from someone else?”
“How long have I felt this way?”
“Is there a specific incident or memory that I can recall that was the beginning of me feeling this way?”
“Was there someone who told me this, or was this just “understood” in the household where I was raised?”
Then, continue the process by asking yourself “empowering questions” like:
“What if I CAN DO THIS?”
“What if THIS REALLY IS POSSIBLE FOR ME?”
“What if I could SUSPEND THIS BELIEF and I REALLY STEPPED OUT AND WENT FOR THIS?”
Begin to VISUALIZE YOURSELF DOING THE THING THAT, BEFORE, YOU WOULDN’T EVEN CONSIDER DOING.
These are your first steps to not only taking back your power, but also to breaking through to the new life you’ve always felt was possible for you, but talked yourself out of stepping into.
In future posts, we’ll discuss specific strategies, techniques and actions that you can take to create breakthroughs in any area of your life that you desire. For today, begin your breakthrough process by being skeptical and questioning any limiting thought or belief that arises for you when you think of the results you really want in the areas of your relationships, health and fitness finances and business and your mental and even spiritual well-being. Then, envision what your life would be like in these areas if there were “no limits” on what you could achieve.
